Although chemistry has refined some of the raw materials, handmade soap is basically the same as it was two thousand years ago although now thankfully we use vegetable fats rather than animal fats and these wonderful natural handmade Castile soaps are now available for us to buy.

The manufacturing of commercial soaps, on the other hand, changed radically during the ’39/’45 war when fats and oils became scarce forcing manufacturers to look for alternatives.

Synthetic soap made from detergents soon became normal and their relatively low cost and ease of manufacture ensured that this synthetic product was here to stay.

However, increasingly, consumers are looking for an alternative to the coarse and abrasive synthetic soaps that can be so damaging to the natural ph factor of the skin.

Handmade soap from natural oils is now very popular as people are looking for an alternative to detergent soap and a number of cottage industries have started making soaps the natural way from fats. Some still use lard ie animal fats, as their basis, but most use vegetable fats.

Vegan soap is now widely made using vegetable fats such as coconut oil, sunflower seed oil and many others. Coconut oil produces a good lather in liquid and hard bar soap but is very drying for the skin. Most people prefer the old fashioned liquid soap used by hospitals made with nothing but olive oil and potassium hydroxide. Olive oil is almost 90% Olmec acid, an extremely mild fatty acid. As a base for soap olive oil creates a gentle moisturising lather making it ideal for sensitive skin as well as safe for babies and children.

The first records of Castile soap being imported into Britain go back to the 1560′s and much mention is made in Crusader records of this pure white hard soap produced in Easter Mediterranean lands. Castile soap was originally 100% olive oil soap, named after the Castile region in Spain, and loved by our great grandmothers as the ultimate in luxury.

Les Baux de Provence – the friend who recommended me this city said it was an unnecessary trip, compared to the region or Gordes Gorges du Verdon. I decided to go anyway. On the road from Avignon to Les Baux, the amount of viewpoints and the view could already imagine what I expected. Getting there, hotels along the road and very cute town, a tiny town wedged in the mountains of limestone at the foot of the ruins of an ancient castle. The entrance to the castle is essential: there you will have one of the most beautiful and spacious than you can imagine!

I stayed at the Hotel de la Bevengudo and I point out strongly. The room was very cozy, with a spa tub and a very good breakfast with croissants , jam and homemade yogurt.

Maussane-les-Alpilles – charming town that is 15 minutes from Les Baux.

It has a square, the Place of Monblan Joseph Laugier, which is delightful to take a sun, drinking a glass of ro’s wine waiting for dinner at La Place, great restaurant that is right there. Well nearby Fontvieille is a city where there is a mill, the

Moulin Alhonse Daudet, and St. Remy-de-Provence, a city where Van Gogh lived. I did not go in the latter, but the hint.

Arles – is a city much larger than previous ones. Has the Roman amphitheater surrounded by some pretty Ruizinh narrow and well. It is also worth visiting the Espace Van Gogh, the former hospice where the painter cut off his ear. Watch closely the garden that inspired the works for some is exciting!

Cassis – super charming, is very near Marseille. Cassis, from Porto leave the boats to meet the Calanques www.calanques13.com.

This tour is a must! It is very beautiful! Then exit the car and hit the road that called Route des Cretes. Has several lookouts to enjoy the blue waters of the Mediterranean. Stop at all, without haste. Then you can go to Ciutat, lunch on the Calanque Figuerolles . The place is very beautiful and quieter than the restaurants of the port in Cassis. I have not slept in Cassis, but when I return (I’ll be back!), I’ll stay a day or two there. There are great restaurants and shops, small shops! The site of the city is www.cassis.fr

Loumarin – was the city I liked most in the Luberon Valley. Legal shops, great restaurants, pretty much the same! On the main street, you can see the first photo below, has a bit of everything: the truffle oil that shop are wonderful, the kitchen supply shop, the gift shop, which has articles of brands and La Marelle La Fiance du Mekong, which I mentioned in the post on the Marais, the Boulangerie which is delicious (try a sweet biscuit made with oil giant, which is very typical of the region), caf’s!

Lavender, surely a defining symbol of Provence. -

True lavender (lavandula angustifolia) grows best at an altitude of 600 – 1,600 metres above sea level, while Spike lavender (lavandula latifolia) prefers higher temperatures and lower altitudes of between 200 – 500 metres.

In Provence, the lavender files have a very different landscape throughout the year. After cutting the harvest, the land just leaving only the dry and short stems, covering with snow in winter. But a little in spring, the green is come out. In lavender season-June, as the summer sunlight is getting heater and heater, the lavender flowers quickly turned into the lovely deep purple.

The following work is harvest. The time is very important for lavenderl, so, the flower farmer has to work without day and night and distilled extract. Until September, all is done, lavender field was able to breath and absorb the essence of nature, to bloom again next summer, purple flowers and preparation.

If you don't homogenize cow's milk you must remove some of the cream. With goats milk this is not neccessary as it is naturally homogenized.

Lovely smell of lemongrass! This Thai Lemon Grass Soap is Lemony but without the sharpness of the citrus fruit; a fresh, earthy scent.

This beauty lemongrass soap has a pleasantly scented and it cleans, too!
Harsh soaps leave my skin feeling tight and dry, so I avoid the common brands. I've been using Natural Handcrafted Soap Lemongrass on sprint time and all summer since last year April -2009 .

These soaps are awesome. The Lemongrass is one of my favories, but I have another to tell you about. The Geranium. Yes, . I know it sounds like Grandma's flowers, but even for me, who usually sneezes at floral smells, I love it. I have an eczema like, itchy skin rash caused by an unidentified skin allergy, and it is the most soothing soap you will ever feel. No prescription required.

Then it hits you that garbage has not been following you everywhere but you are the cause of that disgusting smell; you have body odor. What is this phenomenon of body odor? According to John Riddle, Body odor is the term used for any unpleasant smell associated with the body.

French Cafe au Lait Soap with Cocoa Butter

Cafe au lait (French for "coffee with milk") is prepared with strong, hot coffee and scalded milk. It is the national breakfast drink of France, where it's served steaming hot. This recipe is easy enough to incorporate into your morning routine. UMM , Our soap is made almost the same way,,,,,,,, we use French roasted coffee, milk, olive , palm coconut, and vegetable oils with a hint of cinnamon, it will make you feel like your in the French countryside in the morning. Ground coffee is a natural exfoliant and helps move away dead skin cells it makes this a great scrub soap both for body and face.

People are very sensitive about how they smell. Humans do not appreciate the power of a bad smell as much as skunks appreciate theirs. The striped skunk which is known in the scientific community as Mephitis mephitis accurately shoots a narrow stream of yellow fluid, butyl mercaptan, up to 10 feet at a threat. If the fluid hits the eyes of the threat it may cause temporary blindness. Even if the skunks misses, which is rare, the musk will cause nausea, gagging and general discomfort. (Perhaps next time you are at a party and you receive some unwelcome attention, you should raise those armpits or let out a breath of air to your unsuspecting predator.) Most people however, try to do quite the opposite and purchase expensive perfumes to mask odors and create a sensual smell that will attract the opposite sex. They spend a lot of money buying perfumes like Object of Desire by Bvlgari and they do not realize that the fluid that skunks emit is commercially used as a base for perfumes because of its clinging nature.(3) This makes me wonder whether if it is only by having a bad smell that we can get a good smell.

Folk

Alcohol/witch hazel Wipe your armpits with alcohol, white vinegar or witch hazel instead of deodorant.

Alum Try using a crystal rock made from the mineral salt potassium alum instead of a deodorant. It won't keep you dry as an antiperspirant will, but they clog your sweat glands and contain aluminum chlorohydrate, which may lead to future health problems.

Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar eliminates under arm body odor when used in place of deodorant because it reduces the pH of the skin. Bacteria can't live in areas with low pH.

• White vinegar is also helpful. Place some on a cotton ball and apply to the underarms instead of deodorant. The vinegar smell is gone in minutes and you should be smell-free all day.

Baby powder Use baby powder or talc in areas of heavy perspiration.

Baby wipes (see towelettes below) also work, but the results may be temporary.

Baking soda Baking soda, the odor-eating standby, can be used instead of deodorant. Just apply the powder to your dry armpits. It will kill bacteria and help absorb perspiration. Cornstarch can also be used instead or mixed with the baking soda.

Bauxite crystal deodorant works very well at controlling underarm odors.

Parsley/alfalfa Chewing parsley, alfalfa and other leafy greens will help neutralize body odor, probably because of the deodorizing effect of the chlorophyll.

Radishes Juice about two dozen radishes, add 1/4 teaspoon of glycerine, and put in a squirt or spray-top bottle. Use as an underarm deodorant or to reduce foot odor.

Rosemary is an antibacterial herb. Put 8 to 10 drops of the essential oil in 1 ounce of water and appy it where needed.

Sage Herbalists suggest drinking a cup of sage tea daily to reduce sweat gland activity. This is especially true for those who perspire excessively due to tension. Use 11/2 teaspoonsful of dried sage or two tea bags in one cup of water; steep for ten minutes; drink in small doses throughout the day.

• Fresh sage leaves blended with tomato juice has been found to be very effective.

Tea tree is an antibacterial herb. Make a deodorant by putting 2 drops of the essential oil into 1 ounce of water and apply where needed.

Towelettes (baby wipes) Useful when a tense moment surges the sex hormones which produce fluid under the arms and around the genital areas that, when combined with bacteria, causes odor.

Turnip juice Turnip juice will reduce underarm odor for up to 10 hours. Grate a turnip, squeeze the juice through cheesecloth, so that you have two teaspoonsful. Wash your armpits first, and vigorously rub one teaspoonful on each one.

Wheat grass Take 500 mg of wheat grass daily on an empty stomach and wash down with a glass of water. The chlorophyll will dramatically reduce body odor.

Silicea Homeopaths recommend dissolving three 6X tablets of the tissue salt Silicea under the tongue each morning and evening to knock out odor.

This soap smells like an almond croissant. This handmade soap is made with lots of great oils, plus cocoa butter and almond butter which makes this soap a real treat. With the addition of Brazilian almond and hazelnut oils you will think your taking a shower in the bakery. Brazilian sweet almond oil provides extra softening properties. Hazelnut oil from Brazil is said to be an excellent choice for it's ability to tone and tighten skin. We use the highest quality cocoa butter . Cocoa trees begin to bear fruit when they are three to four years old. A native of the central and South American rainforests, cocoa trees are now cultivated in many tropical locations around the world. This soap is great for all skin types
Great for all skin types, almond oil is created by the pressing of almond nuts. This oil is used to help relieve dry, itchy skin. Sweet almond oil is obtained from the nut of the tree. The almond tree is cultivated in Southern Europe, the Mediterranean countries and California.. This oil is a favorite carrier oil for essential oil aromatherapy blends, although it's often used by itself for moisturizing skin. The oil has no scent and is a great nutrient for softening and conditioning the skin. It's been known to be especially suitable for eczema, itchy, dry and inflamed skin. Regular commercial soaps contain many deleterious and insalubrious chemicals the ingredients that create the lathering effect are: sodium laurel sulfate (SLS), sodium dodecyl and sodium laureth sulfate. Reports show that SLS is very toxic especially to children.

We use a base of olive oil along with coconut, vegetable, sesame, avocado, macadamia nut , kukui nut oils, all great for your skin.
We didn't stop there, for more amazing lather and a scent of morning in Hawaii we added hazelnut oil and shea butter with a touch of pearberry and cinnamon. Since ground coffee is a natural exfoliate and helps move away dead skin cells it also makes a great exfoliator.

Kona coffee beans are classified according to the seed type. Type I beans consist of two beans per cherry, flat on one side, oval on the other. Type II beans consist of one round bean per cherry, otherwise known as a peaberry. That is an essential oils who we added on our kona coffee soaps.

Brazilian almond and hazelnut essential oils you will think your taking a shower in the bakery. Brazilian sweet almond oil provides extra softening properties. Hazelnut oil from Brazil is said to be an excellent choice for it's ability to tone and tighten skin.

We use the highest quality cocoa butter . Cocoa trees begin to bear fruit when they are three to four years old. A native of the central and South American rainforests, cocoa trees are now cultivated in many tropical locations around the world. This soap is great for all skin types
Great for all skin types, almond oil is created by the pressing of almond nuts. This oil is used to help relieve dry, itchy skin. Sweet almond oil is obtained from the nut of the tree. The almond tree is cultivated in Southern Europe, the Mediterranean countries and California.. This oil is a favorite carrier oil for essential oil aromatherapy blends, although it's often used by itself for moisturizing skin. The oil has no scent and is a great nutrient for softening and conditioning the skin. It's been known to be especially suitable for eczema, itchy, dry and inflamed skin. Hazelnut oil contains an astringent quality, making it beneficial for use on oily skin. It absorbs quickly and is useful on oily or acne-prone skins.

Santa Lucia Murari Borba was a farmer's daughter from Murari's Borba, born in Italy 1904. She moved to Brazil in 1917 from her home in Toscany where she had to learn to make soap from scratch and essential oils from the plants out of necessity.

After years of making soap for her 13 children, her family finally convinced her to open a small soap shop in Sao Paulo Brazil where she made soaps with her family for 25 years, those soap recipes found there way to North Carolina last year when I went back to Brazil for Christmas and asked grandmother for food recipes to bring back to NC. While looking through boxes of recipes we came across all her old soap and essential oil recipes.

Hello, my name is Donna,I purchased your product about eight weeks ago and I am hooked. I am so pleased with my skin,its amazing to see the transformation. I had acne on my face and chin and they are almost cleared I even let my niece try some of the soaps and she loves it too..

One major problem with those mainstream acne treatment we have today such as benzoyl peroxide, zinc, Accutane and so on, is that those treatments all cause some harsh side effects to our skin.
Thank you again you have made a 38 year old woman believe that my skin can look as good as my sisters do ( they are not blessed with acne)

first I was very concerned if Goat's coconut soap was going to work for my son. We have tried a lot of stuff including Pro Active. My son is 15 years old,has been breaking outs since he was 12 , his self esteem was really low, nothing was working.... I had no idea how different a Goat Milk and Coconut bar of soap could be. I hope this information about why handmade soap is so good for your skin

What's wrong with the stuff I can find at my local grocery store?
If you buy the soaps you'll find in the grocery store and read the ingredients you'll find things like etidronate potassium chloride or how about cetyltrimethylamoniumbromide (what a mouthful!). Do you really want to use that on your skin?

Many of the commerically available bars are not even soap, they are detergents. Detergents are great cleaners for your laundry, or your dishes, but not for your skin (Not so good for the environment either). The reason is that detergents clean by stripping away the oils which hold the dirt, and therefore they are very drying to skin.
What's right with the handmade stuff?
Most handmade soap is made with vegetable oils like olive oil, coconut oil, and palm oil. It has extra oil added which stays on your skin to moisturize it after the soap is rinsed away. It also conatins glycerin, a byproduct of the chemical reaction that produces soap. Glycerin attracts moisture and holds it so your skin can absorb it. The large manufacturers that do make real soap usually separate out the glycerin and sell it seperately to make the lotions and creams you'll need after drying out your skin with detergents.
Goats Milk
Goats milk has vitamins and minerals to nourish your skin and it has lipids that help seal in moisture. Goats milk soaps are close to the same pH level as our skin and are therefore more gentle.

Why goats and not cows milk?
All kinds of milk can be used in soapmaking, but goats milk has more vitamins and minerals than cows milk, which is great, but the reason it's better for soapmaking is the structure of it's fatty acids (complicated chemistry stuff). Simply put, it combines more smoothly to make a creamier soap which produces a rich, thick lather. If you like great lather a goats milk soap is the one for you!

Oatmeal
Oatmeal has been known as a skincare star since ancient times. Not strait from the carton though. You need to grind it very fine. Ground oatmeal actually binds to the skin and holds moisture there, helping the skin absorb the water.

If you have skin problems (dry, red, itchy, scaly,etc) a 100% natural, perhaps unscented soap with ground oatmeal is a good choice.
Scent
Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil
Scent is the most important ingredient for some soap buyers. I've had people buy soap just to make their bathroom smell good. That's great but they need to use it in the bath or shower too. Soap can be scented with either a natural essential oil or a fragrance oil.

Essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted (usually by distillation) from a plant. Fragrance oils are blended synthetic aroma compounds or natural essential oils or a combination of both.

For a soap to be labeled Natural it will usually be scented only with essential oils. But just because it's natural doesn't always mean it's safer than fragrance oil. Some essential oils come with safety warnings. And some essential oils are just too expensive to use in soapmaking. A half an ounce of sanalwood can cost around $100. Or rose, which is a very popular scent can run you $400. (Yips!) So many soapmakers will use both essential oils and fragrance oils in their different selections.

If you are not sensitive to fragrances, choose whatever smells nice to you. But if you have problems with fragrances you should read the ingredients carefully and make an informed decision. All good soapmakers will list their ingredients on the soap labels and on their websites.

Someone needs to invent a way for us to smell things on the internet!
Color
Natural and Synthetic
Color makes soap prettier, but doesn't contribute any skin care benefits. Powdered material from plants can be used to color soap, dyes can be used, or ground mineral pigments can also be used.

Honey
Honey is vitamin rich. It has vitamin B,C,D, and E. Also, it's thought to have a
slight natural anti-bacterial benefit.

It adds a light, warm, sweet scent, a bit of extra lathering, and is a humectant (a substance that draws moisture from the air).
Clays
Clays have been used since ancient times for masks and skin therapy. They have a slight exfoliating effect and they draw oils and impurities from the skin. A clay mask can unclog the pores and stimulate blood circulation. In soapmaking clays are most often added to facial and shaving soaps. Except for Koalin, sometimes called white clay, they are slightly astringent since they do take oil away from the skin.

A soap with french green clay added would be a good choice for oily skin.
Herbs
Herbs are added for color, for healing properties, and just for added decorative interest. There are too many herbs that can be used in soap to list here. If you are interested in a particular one I suggest the website on herbs in the links section.

Step 1

Just as bread bakers yearn for the impeccable crust and wine sommeliers search for the right bouquet, soap makers attempt the perfect bar. Gentle or astringent, perfumed or unscented, soap is an ancient craft.

If making soap is a reminder of pioneer women stirring giant vats of lard and wood ashes, you’ve studied history. Soap making has a messy past based on a chemical reaction that appeared magical. Fat combines with lye (wood ashes contain a simple lye) resulting in saponification. The substance no longer is fat or lye, but a new product capable of cleaning dirt from skin and clothes.

Saponification remains the basic chemistry. But modern soap makers experiment with exotics like avocado or walnut oils. Although tallow and lard are available, the mixture of vegetable oils like olive, palm or coconut has become a favorite.

Homemade soap is nothing like the chalky bars of pioneer days. It may look like stained glass or be studded with oatmeal. Modern soap makers have turned soap into a hobby that produces the finest, silkiest bars. Perfumed with essential oils such as lavender, clary sage, citrus or rose, home soaps look, and feel, luxurious.

In commercial soap, one of the by-products, glycerin, is siphoned and sold to cosmetic companies. That simple emollient will remain in your home made soap. You can design a creamy soap for dry skin, tingly for oily. Have a skin allergy? You can decide exactly what goes into soap.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS
Soap contains lye. With that comes a caution: lye will burn your skin and blind you if it splashes in your eyes. Vinegar is an antidote, but it cannot undo the damage of spilled lye. In soap making, few accidents happen because soap makers are cautioned extensively to wear goggles, long sleeves, long pants and rubber gloves. Never use lye around children or pets. Once this basic lesson is taught, the rest of soap is easy.

Unlike bread, where you can dabble with the basic ingredients, soap isn’t cooking. It’s a complicated chemical reaction. You measure just the right amount of lye and water. Those are mixed outside or in a well-ventilated room then added to oils and stirred until a trace is formed. A trace is when the mixture has thickened. When a little is dribbled over the surface, the dribble line sits on the surface without sinking into it. An essential oil is stirred into the mixture. The mixture is poured into trays, wrapped in a blanket for warmth and allowed to sit for about 24 hours. Saponification continues for several days and the soap will feel warm to the touch. The soap is not suitable for use until at least a week later and possibly longer. It will cure and harden in a few weeks.

Very nice! I love genuine handmade soaps, and this is a fantastic one. Very rich and lathers well. Has a great blend of all natural ingredients. No synthetic additives. It has virtually no scent. Sometimes natural soaps go overboard with essential oils. This one is just perfect. You are simply left feeling and smelling very cleansed, and your skin feels nourished - not dried out. Nice! Highly recommended. To the best of my knowledge this is the only natural handcrafted soap bar I have found. Hopefully naturalhandcraftedsoap.com will offer more of them. Their other soap bars that I have tried are all wonderful (when you can get them for they always sell out fast).

“…copaiba trees are concentrated as part of a huge government-granted Indian reservation in the heart of the Amazon. Typically you have one or two trees per hectare that produce between two to five kilos of oil per tree per year or two. If you tap more oil, you get less the subsequent years. It is a very renewable crop that is unique to the Amazon, but the trees have to be between 30 and 50 years old to produce good oil…”

Century Old Family of Natural Handcrafted Soap

Santa Lucia Murari Borba was a farmer's daughter from Murari's Borba, born in Italy 1904. She moved to Brazil in 1917 from her home in Toscany where she had to learn to make soap from scratch and essential oils from the plants out of necessity.
After years of making soap for her 13 children, her family finally convinced her to open a small soap shop in Sao Paulo Brazil where she made soaps with her family for 25 years, those soap recipes found there way to North Carolina last year when I went back to Brazil for Christmas and asked grandmother for food recipes to bring back to NC. While looking through boxes of recipes we came across all her old soap and essential oil recipes.

The following letters are taken from an actual incident between a London hotel and one of its guests. The Hotel ended up submitting the letters to the London Sunday Times!

On the bedroom dresser - 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet, - 1 stack of 4 hotel-size Ivory, and 8 Camay in 2 stacks of 4.
Inside the medicine cabinet - 14 Camay in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.
In the shower soap dish - 6 Camay, very moist.
On the northeast corner of tub - 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used.
On the northwest corner of tub - 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3.
Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip. May I suggest that my bedroom window sill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries. One more item, I have purchased another bar of natural handcrafted soap which I am keeping in the hotel vault in order to avoid further misunderstandings.

Cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed-milk foam.
